About the Opportunity

Caber-ra Nanga is a Gaimaragal word meaning ‘peace of mind’. ENGAGE is a service component of Caber-ra Nanga delivered as a partnership between Relationship Australia NSW and the Gaimaragal Group for the Northern Sydney Region. Caber-ra Nanga ENGAGE is funded by the Sydney North Primary Health Network.

The key objective of Caber-ra Nanga ENGAGE is to develop system level protocols to maximise system coordination, integration and subsequently streamline service & support pathways for Aboriginal people experiencing mental health challenges.

 We are currently looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Senior Aboriginal Community Engagement and Wellness Officer to:

  • Facilitate community based engagement opportunities
  • Provide individual service coordination with the aim of supporting service engagement and referral pathways
  • Provide cultural advice, support & cultural immersion opportunities for community & service system
  • Support the facilitation of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid and ‘system literacy’ workshops for Aboriginal people in partnership with Gaimaragal Group
  • Provide both individual and system advocacy
  • Contribute to the current body of evidence around effective mental health services for Aboriginal people.

This is a fixed term contract working 4 days per week ( 30 hours) until 30 June 2018, with a possibility of extension subject to funding.  We are flexible on the days of work arrangements and this will be discussed with the successful candidate.

The annual base salary for this position is $61,184 (for 4 days per week). You will also be eligible for  employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading. 

Supportive travel arrangements will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Essentials

  • This is an Aboriginal identified position and applicants must be able to demonstrate their Aboriginality and capacity to engage with the target community;
  • Formal qualifications, or working towards a qualification in social work, psychology, welfare, or other relevant disciplines;
  • A sound appreciation of traditional and contemporary Aboriginal society and a capacity to respond to varying cultural dynamics and relationships
  • Experience in delivering ‘culturally safe’ services with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities and an ability to work closely with service users in an empathic and respectful way;
  • Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing and the type of clinical and cultural responses currently available in the Northern Sydney area;
  • Experience in community engagement, community development, multi-service coordination and individual, service and system level advocacy;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and relationship building skills – builds connection and empathy quickly;
  • Demonstrated experience in record keeping and effective data recording;
  • Willingness to be flexible in service delivery location, including capacity to travel throughout the catchment in response to community needs.
